Previously: When Heather overheard her husband Matthew whispering to his mother in the dead of night, her world shattered. But the devastating truth behind his words was nothing she could have ever prepared for.

The morning light offered no warmth when Heather finally walked into the kitchen. Her suitcase stood by the front door, a silent declaration of war. Matthew was sitting at the table, staring blankly into a mug of black coffee. When he looked up and saw her red, swollen eyes and the luggage behind her, his face went completely pale.

The Confrontation

"Heather? What is that?" Matthew asked, his voice trembling as he stood up, reaching out for her.

"Don't touch me," Heather spat, stepping back. "I heard you last night, Matthew. I heard you telling your mother that you can't keep pretending anymore. If you don't love me, if you've been faking this entire marriage, just have the courage to say it to my face!"

Matthew froze, his eyes wide with horror. He looked toward the hallway, where Irene was now standing, her expression filled with deep sorrow. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He simply sank back into his chair, burying his face in his hands once more.

"It's not what you think, Heather," Irene said softly, stepping into the kitchen. "Tell her, Matthew. You can't carry this burden alone anymore."

With trembling hands, Matthew reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper, sliding it across the table. Heather hesitated, her heart pounding against her ribs. She picked up the document, her eyes scanning the medical jargon until they locked onto a terrifying term: Huntington's Disease.

"I tested positive, Heather," Matthew whispered, his voice barely audible. "It's genetic. I watched my grandfather fade away, and now... it's happening to me. The symptoms are going to start soon. I didn't want to trap you in a life of caregiving. I was pretending everything was fine, trying to figure out a way to make you hate me so you'd leave and find someone who could give you a real future."

Heather stared at him, the anger instantly draining from her body, replaced by a wave of profound, suffocating grief.
