Previously: When Gloria was forced to clean her own home, her daughter-in-law Vanessa pushed her too far. But her son William's heroic rescue hid a far more sinister family betrayal.

The Savior's Mask

After Vanessa's dramatic fall, William immediately knelt beside Gloria, his face suddenly twisting from glee to deep, performative concern. He helped her to her feet, whispering sweet promises of protection. Vanessa stormed out of the house, cursing them both. For the next two days, William was the perfect son. He cooked, he cleaned, and he gently suggested that Gloria should transfer the deed of the house to his name for "safekeeping" to prevent Vanessa from ever trying to take it.

"Mom, after what she did, we can't trust anyone," William pleaded, holding her hands. "Let me protect your assets before she tries to sue us."

Overwhelmed by gratitude and still shaken by the physical assault, Gloria almost signed the papers. However, something felt deeply wrong. She couldn't shake the memory of William's face right before he shoved Vanessa. In the high-contrast natural light of the living room, she had caught a glimpse of his expression. It wasn't the face of an angry, protective son. It was the face of a man who had just won a lottery. He had been smiling with pure, unadulterated glee.

Suspicious, Gloria decided to check the footage from the small nanny camera she had hidden inside a bookshelf months ago, originally installed to watch her beloved cat. As she loaded the footage from that fateful afternoon on her tablet, her breath hitched. The camera had captured the entire living room. She watched Vanessa sneak up and pull her hair. But it was what William did next that made Gloria's blood run cold. Before rushing in, William had whispered to himself, looking directly at Vanessa's phone which was recording on the counter. He had staged the entire rescue to look like a hero, but a text message notification on his laptop, which was mirrored on the family tablet, popped up. It was from Vanessa: "Did we make it look convincing enough for the lawyer?"
