Previously: When Zachary returned home early from his business trip, he expected a joyful reunion. Instead, he found his pregnant wife Lauren on her knees, weeping while cleaning up a cruel mess.

Unveiling the Malice

Zachary stepped forward, his boots clicking heavily against the wooden floor. The warmth that usually defined his handsome features was completely gone, replaced by a fierce, protective rage. He helped Lauren stand up, gently wiping a tear from her cheek before turning to face his mother. "How could you do this to her?" he demanded, his voice shaking with restrained fury. "She is carrying your grandchild, Diane!"

Diane didn't even flinch. She stood up slowly, smoothing down her elegant designer skirt. "Grandchild? Are you truly that blind, Zachary?" she scoffed, tossing a thick manila envelope onto the coffee table. "I did some digging while you were away. Your precious Lauren has been keeping secrets. She was married before, Zachary. And her previous husband 'mysteriously' went bankrupt right before they divorced. She is nothing but a gold-digger who targeted you for our family fortune!"

Lauren gasped, shaking her head in terror.

"That's not true! My ex-husband was abusive and gambled all our savings away! I fled with nothing!"
she cried out, clutching Zachary's arm. Zachary looked from his weeping wife to the documents scattered on the table. He knew about Lauren's past; she had been completely honest with him from day one. But what his mother didn't know was that Zachary had also done some investigating of his own regarding the family estate's finances—and his mother's sudden desperation to drive Lauren out had a much darker motive.

Zachary picked up the envelope, but instead of looking at the papers inside, he pulled a separate ledger from his own briefcase. "You didn't do this to protect me, Mother," Zachary said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You did this because you know that once Lauren and I have this baby, the trust fund audits begin. And you've been stealing from my late father’s estate for years."
