For a long, agonizing moment, the only sound on the driveway was the dripping of water and Sophie's soft, panicked whimpers. She stood frozen, looking down at her own feet as if she had been caught committing a terrible crime. Michael looked from his daughter’s legs to Jessica, his face pale, his mind struggling to process the impossible sight before him.

I saw her dancing in her room weeks ago, but you wouldn't believe me. And do you want to know why she kept up this lie?" Jessica paused, drawing a deep breath. "Because her grandmother convinced her that if she got better, you would stop loving her. And more importantly, Eleanor needed the medical trust fund money."

Michael’s breath hitched. "What trust fund money?" he asked, his voice cracking.

Jessica pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket—a bank statement she had discovered in Eleanor's guest house. "Eleanor has been submitting fake receipts for 'specialist treatments' in Switzerland. She's been pocketing thousands of dollars every month, using Sophie's fake illness to fund her own lavish lifestyle."
