Ryan’s tech startup, which had yet to turn a single dollar of profit, was sustained solely by Mariana’s generous monthly injections of capital. Eleanor’s lavish lifestyle, from her bronze metallic designer gowns to her monthly trips to Aspen, was billed directly to cards linked to Mariana's family accounts. They had mistaken Mariana’s quiet generosity for weakness, believing they had successfully integrated themselves into her dynasty.

The morning after the incident, Ryan woke up in the master bedroom, nursing a slight hangover and feeling a smug sense of victory. He assumed Mariana was hiding in a hotel, waiting to apologize. He walked downstairs to find Eleanor sipping espresso in the sunroom, looking as triumphant as ever.
