Previously: When a returned soldier tackles a young girl to the ground during a snowy sunset, her mother screams in terror—until she recognizes the man's face and his heartbreaking secret.

The Ghost in the Snow

For a frozen second, Sarah couldn’t breathe. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she bolted down the porch steps, her boots slipping on the icy stairs. She ran toward the two figures huddled in the snow. Her mind screamed in confusion. Mark was supposed to be thousands of miles away, stationed at a secure medical facility overseas after his unit survived a devastating ambush. The official letters had said he was recovering, but they had not expected him home for months.

“Mark!” Sarah cried out, dropping to her knees in the wet snow. “Mark, let her go! It’s okay, it’s just a truck!”

Hearing her voice, the soldier blinked, the hyper-vigilance in his eyes slowly giving way to a crushing realization. He looked down at Lily, who was sobbing softly, more startled by the sudden impact than hurt. Mark slowly released his grip, his hands shaking violently as he sat back on his heels. The dusty camo uniform he wore looked loose on his thin frame.

“I thought... I heard the blast,”

he whispered, his voice cracking. He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, agonizing sobs. Lily, seeing her father’s distress, stopped crying and reached out her small, gloved hand to touch his shoulder.

Sarah pulled them both into a tight embrace as a few curious neighbors began to peer through their curtains. She knew they couldn't stay outside. Helping Mark to his feet, she guided him and Lily inside the warm house. As Mark sat silently on the living room sofa, staring blankly at the floor, Sarah noticed a crumpled envelope sticking out of his tactical vest pocket. It was a formal notice from a local real estate developer, stamped with a final warning.
