As Mark lay panting on the floor, Arthur kept a heavy boot firmly pressed against his shoulder, keeping him pinned. Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribs as she looked from her defeated husband to the older officer. She had never met Arthur in her life—or so she thought. "Sarah, my name is Arthur. I was your father’s commanding officer and closest friend before he passed away," Arthur explained gently. "Before he died, he made me promise to watch over you. When you suddenly married this man and vanished from the city, I knew something was wrong. It took me six months to track you down."

The revelation hit Sarah like a physical blow. Her father had died when she was just a teenager, leaving her a substantial trust fund that she was supposed to inherit on her twenty-fifth birthday—which was next week. Arthur explained that Mark was actually a disgraced former military contractor who had targeted Sarah specifically for her inheritance. The bandage on his forehead wasn't from a car accident; he had sustained the injury during a physical altercation with a private investigator Arthur had hired to track them down. Mark had been desperately trying to force Sarah to sign over her power of attorney before Arthur could find them.
