"You think you can ruin me, Eleanor?" Richard said, tossing the folder onto the console table. "Open it."

With trembling hands, Eleanor opened the folder. Her eyes scanned the document inside, and the color vanished from her face once more. It was their prenuptial agreement, but attached to the back was a legally binding addendum they had both signed before the wedding.

"If you read clause twelve," Richard explained calmly, "you'll see that any act of documented physical or emotional abuse against my daughter immediately voids all financial claims. Not only do you get absolutely nothing, but this video footage is going straight to the police."

Eleanor’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her threats of financial ruin and custody battles evaporated into thin air. She had signed the document without paying attention to the fine print, blinded by the prospect of Richard's wealth.

Within an hour, Eleanor was escorted from the property by two police officers, her belongings packed in garbage bags. The locks were changed, and the suffocating darkness that had hovered over the house finally lifted.

That evening, Richard sat on the living room rug with Lily, helping her build a castle out of wooden blocks. For the first time in months, a genuine smile spread across Lily's face, and her laughter echoed through the halls.
