The Mask Falls
The heavy oak door rattled on its hinges as Richard stormed into the foyer. Eleanor gasped, dropping her chocolate onto the wet marble floor. Her face drained of all color, and for a fraction of a second, she looked like a cornered animal. But as Richard rushed to Lily, kneeling to wrap his trembling daughter in a protective embrace, Eleanor quickly tried to piece her mask back together.
"Richard! You're back early," Eleanor stammered, her voice high and forced. "It's not what it looks like. Lily was being incredibly stubborn, and I was simply trying to teach her some basic discipline. She has to learn to respect this house."
Lily clung to Richard's neck, her small frame still shaking from her ordeal. Richard held her tight, kissing the top of her head. "Shh, Lily, I've got you. You're safe now," he murmured. When he stood up to face Eleanor, his eyes were cold and uncompromising. "I saw the live feed, Eleanor. I saw how you treated my daughter. I heard every word you said to her."
Realizing her lies were useless, Eleanor's expression shifted from panic to absolute malice. She crossed her arms and stepped back, a wicked sneer returning to her lips.
"So you saw it. What are you going to do about it?" she challenged. "You think you can just throw me out? Remember the prenuptial agreement, Richard. If you divorce me, I get half of this estate, a massive monthly alimony, and I will drag your name through the mud. I'll make sure the courts think you're an unfit father."
Richard stared at the woman he thought he loved, disgusted by her greed and cruelty. But instead of showing fear, a cold smile spread across his face. He pulled out his phone and made a single call. "Bring her in," he said.
