Previously: James believed his wife Sarah died in a tragic car accident seven years ago. But when a little girl finds his lost Polaroid, she claims the woman in the photo is her living mother.

The Ghost in the Cottage

Driven by a desperate, terrified hope, James followed the little girl, whose name was Mia. She led him down a winding alleyway to a secluded cottage with faded blue shutters. Every step felt like a march toward a cliff. His mind screamed that this was impossible, a cruel trick of resemblance, but his heart refused to listen.

Mia pushed the front door open, her voice echoing into the warm hallway.

"Mommy! I'm home! And I found a man who has your picture!"

James stood frozen on the threshold. The floorboards creaked, and a woman walked out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a floral apron. She looked up, her gaze shifting from Mia to the shadow standing in her doorway. The moment her eyes met James's, the apron slipped from her fingers. The color drained from her face, leaving her deathly pale.

It was Sarah. She was older, her hair styled differently, but it was his wife. The woman he had wept over for nearly a decade.

"James..." she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and sorrow.

James stumbled forward, his hands reaching out as if to touch a phantom.

"Sarah? How... how are you alive? They told me your car went off the bridge! I had a funeral for you!"

Before Sarah could answer, she rushed forward, desperately trying to push James back toward the door.

"You shouldn't be here, James! Please, you have to leave right now, before he comes back!" she pleaded, tears spilling over her cheeks.

But it was too late. Heavy footsteps echoed from the back of the house. A tall, imposing man in a police uniform stepped into the living room. His eyes locked onto James, and his hand instinctively moved to the holster at his hip.

"What is going on here?" the officer demanded, his voice cold and commanding.

James looked at the man's badge. It was Officer David Vance—the very detective who had delivered the news of Sarah's death to James seven years ago.
