Emily couldn’t stay hidden in the shadows any longer. The pain of not knowing was worse than whatever truth lay behind that door. Pushing the wooden door open, she stepped into the warm glow of the bedside lamp. Both David and Ruth gasped, their faces instantly draining of color. David stood up quickly, his eyes red and swollen. "Emily," he stammered, stepping toward her. "How much of that did you hear?"

"Enough to know you’ve been lying to me,"

Emily whispered, her voice trembling but resolute. "What are you pretending, David? Are you in love with someone else? Is our marriage over?"

David looked at his mother, then back at Emily, a look of profound agony on his face. "No, Emily, God, no," he said, collapsing back onto the bed. He buried his face in his hands again, sobbing openly. Ruth took Emily’s hand, her eyes filled with tears. "Emily, please sit down. It's not what you think. He was only trying to protect you."

Through his tears, David finally spoke the truth that he had been hiding for six long months. He didn't have another woman. Instead, he had been diagnosed with a rare, aggressive neurological disorder. The doctor had given him a grim prognosis, and David, knowing how Emily had struggled after losing her father to cancer just a year prior, couldn't bear to put her through that grief again. He had been pretending to be healthy, hiding his symptoms, and secretly arranging medical consultations with Ruth's help.

"I wanted to spare you the pain for as long as I could,"

David choked out. "But the symptoms are getting worse, and keeping this from you has been killing me inside."
