Wyatt Vance lived in the shadow of the Adirondacks, where the winter wind cut like a blade and the silence was absolute. For two years, since the sudden illness that took his wife, Clara, Wyatt had sought solace in isolation. His cabin was his sanctuary, and the frozen expanse of Silver Lake was his backyard. He had become a ghost in his own life, speaking to no one, numb to the world around him.

On a bitter January morning, with the temperature hovering well below zero, Wyatt went out to check his perimeter lines. The fog lay thick and heavy over the lake, obscuring the treeline. Suddenly, a sound broke the quiet—a high-pitched, desperate whimper that echoed across the ice. It was a cry of pure terror.

Wyatt hurried toward the sound, his boots crunching softly on the snow. Near the center of the lake, where the ice was notoriously thin, he saw a dark shape thrashing in the dark, freezing water. It was a timber wolf, its front paws desperately clawing at the slippery edge of a jagged hole.

Without hesitation, Wyatt’s old search-and-rescue instincts kicked in. He dropped to his stomach, sliding across the groaning ice to distribute his weight. The ice cracked beneath him, a terrifying sound that warned of imminent danger. But Wyatt kept moving. He reached the edge and grabbed the wet wolf by its front paws.

The wolf was heavy, its thick coat drenched and freezing. Wyatt’s muscles burned as he pulled with all his might.

"Come on, come on, you can do it!" Wyatt roared against the wind.

With one final, desperate heave, he dragged the wolf out of the abyss. The momentum threw Wyatt backward onto the hard ice, gasping for breath. As he lay there, exhausted, the mist parted. A dozen shadowy figures emerged from the treeline. The wolf pack had arrived, their golden eyes locked onto Wyatt.
