Previously: When Wyatt risks his life to rescue a drowning wolf from a frozen lake, he finds himself trapped between a ruthless enemy and a pack of wild predators.

The Shield of the Wild

The wind howled across the barren lake as Henderson began his countdown. Wyatt looked into the black barrel of the rifle, his heart hammering against his ribs. He refused to let Henderson steal his family's legacy, but the odds were entirely against him.

Suddenly, a deep, resonant growl vibrated through the ice.

From the thick fog, the massive alpha wolf stepped forward. Instead of attacking Wyatt, the great beast stood directly beside him, its bared teeth glinting in the pale winter light. Within seconds, the rest of the pack emerged from the mist, forming a dense, protective semicircle around Wyatt and the injured young wolf.

Henderson’s face went pale. The sneer vanished from his lips as he realized he was surrounded by over a dozen apex predators, all focused on him with lethal intent. He took a trembling step back, his rifle shaking.

"Shoot them, Brody! Shoot them!" Henderson panicked, his voice cracking.

But Brody had already dropped his traps and was scrambling back onto his snowmobile. Seeing his enforcer flee, Henderson lost his nerve entirely. He fired a wild shot into the air, dropped his rifle into the snow, and bolted for his vehicle. Within moments, the roar of their engines faded into the distance.

The silence returned to Silver Lake. Wyatt fell to his knees, his adrenaline fading into overwhelming relief. The alpha wolf approached him slowly, sniffed his hand, and let out a soft huff before turning to the rescued pup. Wyatt gently lifted the shivering young wolf, carrying him back to the warmth of his cabin.

For the next three days, the pack kept a silent vigil outside Wyatt's cabin while the young wolf recovered. When the pup was strong enough to return to the wild, Wyatt watched them disappear back into the forest. For the first time in two years, Wyatt did not feel alone. He realized that kindness is a universal language, and sometimes, the wild is more human than humanity itself.
