Previously: When Ethan risked his life to pull a freezing wolf from a cracked ice sheet, he thought it was a simple act of mercy—until the pack returned to collect a debt.

A Betrayal in the Blizzard

The pack stood at the edge of the ice, their intelligent eyes fixed on the man lying next to their drowning brother. Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs. He knew he had no defense if they chose to attack. But the wet wolf slowly stood up, shook the icy water from his thick fur, and walked toward his pack. The alpha wolf sniffed him, then looked back at Ethan with a long, unreadable gaze. With a silent signal, the pack vanished back into the mist.

Ethan dragged himself back to his cabin, his body shivering violently from the early stages of hypothermia. He needed fire, dry clothes, and warmth. But as he pushed the cabin door open, he was met with a shocking sight. His brother-in-law, Marcus, was standing by his desk, holding a stack of land deeds and Ethan's emergency satellite phone.

“What are you doing here, Marcus?” Ethan gasped, his voice cracking from the cold.

Marcus didn't answer with kindness. Instead, a cold, greedy sneer crossed his face. Marcus had been drowning in debt, desperately trying to force Ethan to sell his inherited woodland to developers. Seeing Ethan weak and helpless, Marcus saw his opportunity.

“You’ve always been in the way, Ethan,” Marcus whispered. “The developers will pay millions for this ridge. And now, the cold is going to do my dirty work.”

With a sudden move, Marcus grabbed Ethan’s keys, his matches, and his emergency radio. He stepped outside, slamming the heavy wooden door and locking the deadbolt from the outside. Ethan collapsed against the door, hammering his numb fists against the wood, but he was too weak. Outside, the engine of Marcus’s truck roared to life, but the sound was quickly drowned out by the rising fury of a sudden blizzard.
