Previously: When Ethan risked his life to pull a freezing wolf from a cracked ice sheet, he thought it was a simple act of mercy—until the pack returned to collect a debt.

The Debt Repaid

Inside the freezing cabin, darkness fell like a heavy shroud. Ethan lay on the floor, his limbs stiffening as the temperature plummeted. He knew he had only hours before his heart would stop. But then, a low, resonant howl vibrated through the log walls. It was followed by the frantic scratching of heavy paws against the door.

Ethan dragged himself to the window, scraping the frost away. In the swirling snow, he saw a sight he would never forget. A dozen wolves had surrounded Marcus’s truck, which had slid off the icy driveway into a deep snowdrift. The tires spun uselessly. Inside, Marcus was screaming, frantically honking the horn as the giant grey wolf Ethan had saved leapt onto the hood, baring his teeth through the windshield.

But the pack didn't tear Marcus apart. Instead, the wolf Ethan had rescued turned toward the cabin. In his jaws, he held a thick leather pouch. It was Marcus’s supply bag, which had been thrown from the truck during the crash. Inside that bag were Ethan's keys and his matches.

The wolf dropped the bag at the cabin door, let out a sharp bark, and then led his pack back into the howling storm, leaving Marcus trapped and terrified in his freezing truck.

With the last of his strength, Ethan reached through the firewood hatch, snagged the dropped bag, and unlocked the door. Within minutes, a roaring fire warmed the cabin. The next morning, the authorities—whom Ethan had called using the recovered satellite phone—rescued a half-frozen, weeping Marcus from his truck, arresting him on the spot.

Ethan stood on his porch, looking out at the silent forest. He knew he would never be alone in these woods again. True strength isn't just about surviving the wild; sometimes, it's about showing mercy to those who live in it, for the wild never forgets a debt of kindness.
