Previously: When my sister suddenly passed away, my family rushed the funeral. But a faint sound from inside the casket drove me to do the unthinkable before it was too late.

The Secret in the Shadow

I dropped the heavy axe, the metal clanging loudly against the floor. With trembling hands, I began tearing away the shattered pieces of the casket lid. Marcus stood paralyzed, his face pale as death itself, while Elena slowly began backing toward the exit. "Help me!" I cried out to Marcus, my voice cracking. "Don't just stand there, help me get her out!"

Reluctantly, as if waking from a trance, Marcus stepped forward and helped me pry open the remaining wooden barrier. Inside lay my beautiful sister, Lily. She was dressed in a white satin gown, her skin terribly pale, but her chest was moving. Her eyelids fluttered, and she let out another weak, gasping breath. She was heavily drugged, but she was alive.

"How is this possible?" Marcus whispered, his voice trembling as he looked from Lily to his sister, Elena. "Elena, what did you do?"

Elena stopped near the heavy oak doors of the viewing room. Her tears had stopped, replaced by a cold, desperate glare. "She was supposed to be asleep," Elena muttered, her voice devoid of any warmth. "She wasn't supposed to wake up until it was over."

The truth hit me like a physical blow. Next week was Lily’s twenty-fifth birthday, the day she was set to inherit our father’s entire multi-million-dollar estate. If Lily died before then, the entire fortune would revert to Elena. Elena had poisoned her. She had used a powerful, rare paralytic drug to mimic death, bribing a corrupt medical examiner to sign the death certificate without an autopsy, and rushing the funeral to bury the evidence forever.

"You monster!" I screamed, lunging toward Elena, but Marcus caught me. Yet, instead of defending his sister, Marcus looked at Elena with pure betrayal. "You told me she died of natural causes, Elena! You didn't say you did this!" he shouted, realizing he had almost become an accessory to a horrific murder.
