Previously: When my sister suddenly passed away, my family rushed the funeral. But a faint sound from inside the casket drove me to do the unthinkable before it was too late.

A New Beginning

Marcus immediately pulled out his phone and dialed 911, realizing his only chance at leniency was to cooperate. Elena tried to bolt through the doors, but the funeral home director, alerted by the shouting and the sound of splintering wood, blocked her path in the hallway. Within minutes, the distant wail of sirens pierced the morning air, growing louder until red and blue lights flashed through the sheer white curtains of the viewing room.

Paramedics rushed into the room, quickly administering oxygen and a powerful stimulant to counteract the paralytic toxin in Lily's system. As they lifted her onto a gurney, she weakly reached out her hand, grasping my fingers. "Sarah," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "You came."

"I will always come for you, Lily," I cried, kissing her cold forehead. "You're safe now."

The police arrested Elena on the spot, charging her with attempted murder and conspiracy. Marcus was also taken into custody for questioning, though his quick call to the authorities saved him from the worst of the charges. The corrupt medical examiner who had signed the fake certificate was arrested later that afternoon, unraveling a web of greed and betrayal that had almost cost my sister her life.

Lily spent a week in the hospital recovering from the toxic effects of the drug, but she made a full recovery. With Elena behind bars, the court officially invalidated all of her claims to our father's estate. Lily and I inherited everything, but the money meant nothing compared to the miracle of having my sister beside me.

We sold the old family mansion and moved to a beautiful house by the coast, far away from the dark memories of that funeral home. I finally got to take off my diner apron for good, but I kept the memory of that day close to my heart. It taught me that love is stronger than any greed, and a sister's bond can shatter even the darkest plots.

True wealth isn't found in a bank account or an inheritance, but in the fierce, unbreakable love of the family we fight to protect.
