A Desperate Escape

The heavy scent of white lilies and roses filled the warm, dimly lit air of the funeral parlor. To the quiet crowd of mourners, it was a scene of solemn grief. But to Sarah, who had just shattered the quiet sanctuary by bursting through the double doors, it was a crime scene. She was panting, her chest heaving under her bright orange prison jumpsuit. A white kitchen apron was still tied around her waist, a stark reminder of the prison work detail she had escaped just hours before. In her hands, she gripped a heavy, polished wooden axe handle, her knuckles white with desperation.

She locked eyes with the pristine white casket resting at the front of the chapel. "She's not dead!" Sarah screamed, her voice cracking with raw emotion. Before anyone could move, she lunged forward, raising the wooden handle high above her head. With a guttural cry, she brought it down. The impact was deafening. The polished white lid cracked, plaster and wood splintering under the brutal force of her swing.

"Have you lost your mind?" David roared, stepping forward.

David, dressed in a flawless black tuxedo, looked on in absolute horror. Beside him, their mother, Eleanor, clutched her chest, her mouth draped open in a silent scream of terror. Clara and Mark, family friends who had stood by the family's lies for years, gasped and shrank back. Sarah didn't care about their shock. Tears streamed down her face as she swung the handle again, her teeth clenched in determination. She struck the lid a second time, carving a jagged, dark hole into the top of the casket.

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. Sarah stood trembling, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she stared down at the dark void she had uncovered. David took a slow, hesitant step forward, his anger suddenly melting into a look of sheer, paralyzing confusion. He stared at the broken wood, his jaw dropping. He whispered, "Did you hear that?"
