Previously: Wrongfully imprisoned, Sarah escapes when she hears of her sister's sudden death. Armed with an axe at the funeral, she smashes the casket—only to unleash a truth that terrifies everyone present.

The Truth Unburied

The officer walked slowly toward the casket, his hand resting on his holster. He leaned over the jagged hole Sarah had carved. A soft, desperate whimper drifted up from the darkness. Instantly, the officer’s demeanor changed. He gestured to his partner. "Get this lid open, now!" he ordered. Together, they pried the shattered wood apart, revealing a false bottom in the elegant casket.

Inside, pale and barely conscious but breathing, lay Emma. She had a small oxygen mask connected to a hidden tank in the lining of the casket, a cruel setup designed to keep her alive just long enough to be buried deep underground where no one would ever hear her. Paramedics, who had been on standby for the escaped convict, rushed into the room with a stretcher. As they lifted Emma out, she weakly opened her eyes, locking them onto Sarah.

"Sarah... you came," Emma whispered, her voice barely a breath.

Eleanor and David tried to slip out of the side exit, but the third officer blocked their path, his handcuffs already in hand. It didn't take long for the truth to unravel. Under intense police interrogation, the corrupt medical examiner who had signed Emma's death certificate confessed to receiving a massive bribe from David. They had used a rare paralyzing sedative to mimic death, planning to bury Emma alive to prevent her from exposing their financial crimes and to claim her portion of the estate.

Sarah's escape was deemed an act of heroic necessity. All charges against her were dropped, and she was officially exonerated. Weeks later, standing in the warm sunlight outside the hospital, Sarah held Emma’s hand tightly. They had lost their mother and brother to greed, but they had saved each other. True family is not defined by bloodlines or wealth, but by the lengths to which we are willing to go to protect the ones we love.
