Previously: When young Lily received a free ice cream cone from a kind vendor named Ryan, she promised to pay him back. Years later, she discovers he is bankrupt and about to lose everything.

The Shadow of Ruin

Twenty-five years later, the cobblestone square had changed. Corporate chains had pushed out the local merchants, and the once-vibrant market was now dominated by modern glass storefronts. Ryan, who now went by his middle name, Robert, was no longer the energetic young man with the bright future. Time and financial hardship had taken a heavy toll. He sat defeated on the curb next to his rusted, outdated ice cream cart, his head buried in his hands.

β€œI went bankrupt. I'll end up on the street,” Robert muttered to himself, his voice cracking with despair.

He had spent his life savings trying to keep his small business afloat, but a predatory development company, Vanguard Holdings, had bought up the surrounding land and tripled his permit fees. Audrey was none other than Lily, who had built a powerful investment firm from the ground up, changing her name to distance herself from her painful childhood. When an old friend from Oakridge sent her a photo of Robert's plight, she immediately recognized the man who had saved her all those years ago.

β€œHe went bankrupt,” Audrey spoke urgently into her phone to her chief legal counsel. She gripped the device tightly, her eyes flashing with determination. β€œI'm coming. Today I repay his kindness.”

When Audrey arrived at the square, she found Marcus Vance ordering two movers to hoist Robert's historic cart onto a flatbed truck. Robert was weeping, pleading that the cart was his last connection to his late wife. Vance merely laughed, pushing the old man aside. Stepping onto the cobblestones, her tailored black blazer sharp against the gray morning, Audrey intervened, but Vance sneered, claiming the debt was absolute and the cart was already legally seized.
