Previously: When elegant Evelyn took her son Owen for a walk in New York, they stumbled upon a homeless boy who looked exactly like him, holding a piece of her forgotten past.

Without a second thought, Evelyn knelt on the dirty sidewalk, pulling Toby into her arms. The boy stiffened, unaccustomed to warmth, but slowly relaxed against her soft wool coat. She knew in her soul this was her son. Ignoring the stares of onlookers, she gathered both boys and rushed back to their penthouse in a cab.

Once inside, she bathed Toby, dressed him in Owen's spare clothes, and fed him. Seeing them side-by-side, clean and smiling, there was absolutely no doubt. They were identical twins.

The Terrible Confrontation

When her husband, Richard, a prominent corporate attorney, walked through the door that evening, he froze. The color drained from his face as he saw two identical blonde boys playing on the living room rug.

"Evelyn... what is this?"

Richard stammered, his voice cracking.

Evelyn stood up, holding the bronze locket tightly in her fist. Her voice was ice.

"You told me our second baby died in the delivery room, Richard. You told me we had to bury him. But today, I found him begging on a street corner. Explain this to me before I call the police."

Richard sank into an armchair, burying his face in his hands. The truth poured out of him like a dark, toxic flood. Eight years ago, Richard had been deeply in debt to dangerous people. Afraid of ruin, he had made a horrific deal with a corrupt doctor. A wealthy, childless couple had offered a fortune for one of the twins. Richard had faked the death certificate of the second baby, selling him to pay off his debts.

"I had no choice, Evelyn! It saved our family!"

Richard pleaded, tears streaming down his face. But the betrayal ran even deeper. The wealthy couple who bought Toby had died in a tragic accident two years ago, leaving the young boy to fall through the cracks of a broken system until he ended up on the streets. Evelyn listened, her heart breaking into a million pieces for the son who had suffered while they lived in luxury.
