A Parisian Nightmare

The Grand Ballroom of the Hôtel de Ville shimmered under a thousand crystals. Gilded Corinthian columns reached towards a ceiling painted with cherubs, and the air thrummed with the polite, yet cutting, murmur of the Parisian elite. Outside, rain lashed against the soaring arched windows, each drop a tiny drumbeat against the hushed opulence. I, Dr. Arthur Vance, a general practitioner from the farmlands of Ohio, felt the polished mahogany beneath my worn cowhide boots like an alien landscape. My tweed trench coat, a familiar shield against the elements back home, felt like a costume here, drawing more than a few sideways glances. I clutched a flute of champagne, the effervescence doing little to calm the unease churning in my gut. This was a medical conference, a chance to present my research on obscure plant toxins, but it felt more like an interrogation by society itself.

Then I saw her. Dr. Victoria Sterling. Her reputation preceded her like a perfectly tailored storm. A neurosurgeon whose scalpel danced with impossible precision, she moved through the room with an aristocratic sneer etched onto her face. Her ivory silk blazer was immaculate, her diamond studs glinted, and her severe platinum chignon seemed to hold her disdain in place. Our eyes met across the sea of tuxedoes and glittering gowns. She visibly recoiled, her perfectly sculpted eyebrows arching in a silent question that felt like a physical blow. As if sensing her judgment, I shifted my weight, and my boot scuffed a nearly invisible mark on the floor. It was all the invitation she needed.

“Did you wade through a pigpen just to contaminate our gala, country quack?”

Her voice, sharp and laced with mockery, cut through the ambient noise. A wave of haughty amusement rippled through the nearby patrons. I felt a flush creep up my neck, but I held her gaze, my own eyes narrowing. My focus, however, was drawn past her shoulder, to the Governor's VIP table. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.
