Previously: When Victoria publicly accused the young maid Clara of seducing her husband, she expected a confession. Instead, an old letter and a family friend's confession exposed a decades-old family secret.

The Secret in the Script

The revelation hung in the air, thick and heavy. Victoria’s grip on Clara’s arm loosened, and the young maid stumbled back, nearly dropping her silver tray. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she looked from Charles to Arthur, utterly bewildered. She had lived her whole life believing she was an orphan, a girl from the foster system who had to work twice as hard just to survive. Now, she was being told her existence was tied to the very family she served.

"What are you talking about, Charles?"

Victoria demanded, her voice rising in pitch as she tried to regain control of the room.

"This is absurd! This girl is a thief and a homewrecker. She’s trying to manipulate Arthur!"

But Arthur wasn't listening to his wife. His eyes were locked on the paper. The elegant, looping letters belonged to Eleanor Vance, his late mother, a woman known for her icy demeanor and iron grip on the family fortune. He read the words aloud, his voice shaking.

"My dearest Clara,"

Arthur read,

"if you are reading this, it means you have found your way back to the estate. I pray you can forgive me. I paid them to keep you away to protect the family name, but my guilt has followed me to the grave. Half of everything I left behind belongs to you."

Charles stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Clara’s trembling shoulder. He looked at the shocked guests and then at Arthur.

"Your mother had a child before she married your father, Arthur. To avoid a scandal that would ruin her social standing, she paid a couple to adopt the baby girl and never speak of her again. But before she died, she regretted her cruelty. She left this letter in the safe, hoping Clara would one day find it."

Victoria’s face drained of color. If Clara was Eleanor’s daughter, she wasn't just a maid. She was a rightful heir to the massive Vance fortune—and a threat to everything Victoria had married into.
