The Stormy Encounter

The rain beat mercilessly against the glass windows of the dusty pawn shop. Inside, the air smelled of old brass, aged paper, and damp wood. David, a fifty-year-old jeweler in a charcoal grey blazer, rubbed his tired eyes. He was about to turn off the lights and close up for the night when the heavy wooden door creaked open, letting in a gust of freezing wind and rain.

A young woman in her early twenties stepped inside. Her blonde hair was damp, clinging to the sides of her face, and she wore an oversized black zip-up hoodie that seemed to swallow her small frame. She looked anxious, her eyes darting around the shop before settling on David behind the glass counter.

She approached him, her hands trembling as she reached into her pocket. She placed a gold locket on the counter.

"How much will you give me for this necklace?"
she asked, her voice trembling.

David picked up the piece, examining the delicate craftsmanship under the dim light. It felt strangely familiar, but he shook off the feeling.

"I'll give you fifty, not more,"
he said calmly.

The girl nodded anxiously.

"Okay, deal,"
she replied, eager to finish the transaction. David opened the register, but as he moved to count the bills, his thumb brushed against the locket's clasp. It popped open, revealing a faded photograph of a little girl with bright blue eyes. Next to it was an inscription: For my darling Clara.

David’s breath hitched. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he stared at the inscription he had engraved with his own hands fifteen years ago.

"It can't be,"
he gasped, looking up at the girl. Realizing something was wrong, Clara snatched the fifty-dollar bill, grabbed her things, and bolted out the door. Panic surged through David's veins.
"That necklace belongs to my daughter! My missing daughter!"
he screamed, leaping over the counter to chase her into the freezing storm.
