A Final, Hopeless Departure

The airport terminal was a chaotic blur of rushing travelers, rolling suitcases, and metallic announcements echoing from the ceiling. For Sarah, however, the world had slowed down to a painful, agonizing crawl. Dressed in a simple plum dress that barely concealed her growing pregnant belly, she clutched her boarding pass like a lifeline. She was leaving her home, her memories, and the life she had built with her late husband, David, forever. Since David’s tragic death in the line of duty six months ago, his wealthy family had ruthlessly stripped her of everything, leaving her homeless and broke. This flight to her sister's couch across the country was her absolute last resort.

As she navigated the crowded terminal, her eyes caught a flash of tan uniform. Standing near the security checkpoint was a K9 officer, his hand holding the leash of a majestic German Shepherd. Sarah stopped dead in her tracks. Her breath caught in her throat. The dog’s intelligent, dark eyes locked onto hers, and for a fleeting second, Sarah saw a ghost from her past. It was Max, the very dog who had been David’s loyal partner on the police force. After the funeral, the department had reassigned the dog, and Sarah had been barred from seeing him. Seeing him now felt like a message from the heavens.

Unable to help herself, Sarah slowly approached the handler. Her voice trembled as she gestured toward her belly.

"Can he say hello?"
she asked, her eyes already swimming with tears.

Officer Miller, the handler, looked surprised by the raw emotion on her face, but his expression softened instantly. He gave a warm wave.

"Go ahead, he's very gentle,"
he replied encouragingly.

Without a care for the dirty airport floor or the stares of passing travelers, Sarah bent down, her hands open. Max’s ears perked up, and his tail began to wag with a frantic, joyous energy. Kneeling on the cold tiles, Sarah wrapped her arms around the dog's thick neck, burying her face in his fur.

"Good boy,"
she whispered, her body shaking with silent, cathartic sobs.
"I miss him too, buddy. I miss him too."
