Previously: When restaurant owner David followed a young girl who claimed she had already eaten, he never expected to uncover a devastating family secret hidden in a dark alley.

An Unexpected Discovery

Determined to help, David returned to the alleyway the following afternoon. This time, he carried two heavy bags filled with fresh groceries, warm milk, and hearty meals. He knocked gently on the weathered basement door. A pale, tired-looking woman opened it, her eyes instantly filling with defensiveness and fear. But when David explained who he was, her shoulders slumped, and tears welled in her eyes.

“I’m Sarah,” she said, inviting him inside the cramped, chilly room. “Thank you for yesterday. Lily told me a kind man helped her, though she tried to pretend she wasn't hungry. She’s always trying to protect us.”

As David placed the groceries on the small table, his eyes drifted to a framed photograph resting on a wooden shelf. His breath caught in his throat. The man in the picture was Arthur—his former best friend and business partner from a decade ago. Years ago, their thriving joint venture had collapsed overnight. David had been told Arthur stole the company funds and fled, leaving David in near-bankruptcy. He had spent ten years harboring deep resentment.

“That’s my late husband, Arthur,” Sarah said softly, noticing his gaze. “He passed away two years ago. After his business partner betrayed him and stole everything, Arthur was forced to join the military to support us. He never recovered from the heartbreak of that betrayal.”

David felt the room spin. “Betrayed him? But... Arthur was the one who left with the money.”

Sarah shook her head vigorously. “No! The lawyer who managed the partnership, Richard Vance, showed Arthur the forged documents proving his partner had drained the accounts.”

The truth hit David like a physical blow. Richard Vance, the trusted attorney who handled their finances, had stolen the money himself and played the two friends against each other. Before David could process the revelation, the heavy basement door was kicked open. A man in an expensive wool coat stepped in, holding a clipboard. It was Richard Vance himself, now a wealthy slumlord.

“Time’s up, Sarah,”
Richard sneered, ignoring David.
“You’re three months behind on rent. Pack your things and get out.”
