The Standard of Care

Ryan guided Edward to his styling station, ignoring the sharp glares and dramatic sighs coming from Heather at the reception desk. The other stylists shook their heads in disapproval, whispering that Ryan was ruining the salon's elite reputation by bringing street trash into their pristine workspace. But Ryan remained completely unfazed. He gently draped a fresh black cape over Edward's shoulders, treating him with the exact same respect he would show a high-paying celebrity client.

As Ryan began to wash and condition the elderly man's tangled hair, Edward started to open up. He explained that he hadn't always lived on the streets. Years ago, he had a loving family and a successful career, but a series of tragic medical bills and the heartbreaking loss of his wife had stripped him of everything. Now, he had finally secured an interview for a modest retail job, and he simply wanted to look presentable.

"People look right through you when you're on the street," Edward murmured, closing his eyes as the warm water rinsed away months of dust. "They forget you're still a human being."

"I haven't forgotten," Ryan replied softly. "Everyone deserves a second chance, Edward."

Ryan spent the next forty-five minutes meticulously cutting and styling Edward's silver hair. He trimmed the wild beard into a sharp, sophisticated shape, completely transforming the elderly man's appearance. When Ryan handed him the mirror, Edward stared in disbelief at the handsome, dignified gentleman looking back at him.

With tears in his eyes, Edward stood up and thanked Ryan profusely. He insisted on leaving his single dollar bill on the station, along with a small, folded piece of paper. After Edward walked out, Heather marched over, snatched the dollar, and tossed it into the trash can with a loud laugh. But before Ryan could reply, the salon's landline rang.
