A Kind Waiter Was Fired For Helping A Stranger Who Revealed A Shocking Identity
Previously: When a kind-hearted waiter is fired on the spot for helping a bruised stranger collapsing outside a cafe, a mysterious phone call changes both of their lives forever.
The Storm Escalates
The lock on the cafe door clicked shut with a definitive, heartless sound. Richard turned the "Open" sign to "Closed" and walked away, leaving Toby and the injured stranger shivering in the dark. Toby sighed, feeling a sudden weight of anxiety. He had just lost his only source of income, all for trying to do the right thing.
But looking down at Derek, Toby knew he couldn't regret his choice. He helped the bruised man stand, supporting most of his weight as they slowly made their way to a small bus shelter just twenty yards down the street. It offered minimal protection from the biting wind, but at least the rain was no longer pelting them directly.
"I'm sorry you lost your job because of me," Derek said, his voice stronger now, though he still clutched his bruised ribs. "Richard has always been a piece of work, hasn't he?"
Toby looked at him in surprise. "You know Richard?"
Derek offered a grim, painful smile.
"I know of him. My name is Derek Vance. I was mugged two blocks from here. They took my wallet and my watch, and they beat me pretty badly when I fought back. I lost my phone in the scuffle, but fortunately, I found it in the gutter. It had just enough battery left to make that one call."
Toby stared at him, trying to process the name. Derek Vance. The name sounded incredibly familiar, but he couldn't quite place it. "Are you going to be okay, Derek? Do you need an ambulance?"
"No, my people are on their way," Derek replied, his gaze shifting back toward the Midnight Harbor Cafe. "You know, Toby—I saw your name tag—that cafe has been violating its lease agreements for months. Richard thinks he can treat people like garbage because he runs the place. He doesn't realize who actually holds the deed to this entire harbor development."
Toby’s eyes widened as the pieces began to fall into place. "You... you're Vance Properties?"
Derek nodded slowly, a sharp, cold light returning to his eyes.
"I am. And Richard is about to find out what happens when you throw the landlord out into the rain."
