Sarah stood frozen on the gravel, the wind whipping loose strands of hair across her face. The weight of the cash in her hands felt surreal, almost heavy enough to pull her to her knees. She looked at Roy, her mind racing. How did this stranger know about the diner's crushing debts? She hadn't spoken of her financial ruin to anyone, let alone a passing traveler.

"I don't understand," Sarah stammered, tears welling in her eyes. "This is thousands of dollars. Why would you do this for a stranger?"

Roy stepped closer, his boots crunching on the gravel. He reached into his leather vest and pulled out an old, creased photograph, handing it to her. Sarah’s heart stopped. The photo showed two young men in front of the very same diner, laughing with their arms slung over each other's shoulders. One was her father, Thomas, looking young and full of life. The other, surprisingly, was a younger, clean-shaven Roy.

"I'm no stranger, Sarah," Roy said softly, his rugged exterior softening. "Your father and I grew up together. When we were young, I got into some real trouble. The kind of trouble that lands you in a dark place for a long time."

He explained that twenty years ago, when he had nothing but the clothes on his back and a broken motorcycle, Thomas had taken him in. He fed him, gave him a place to sleep, and helped him get back on his feet without asking for a single dime. When Roy had tried to promise he would pay him back, Thomas had simply smiled and told him to pass the kindness on when he was ready.

But the revelation took a darker turn. Roy's expression hardened as he looked toward the diner's entrance. "But I didn't just come back to pay a debt, Sarah. I came because I heard what Marcus is doing to you."

Marcus was the ruthless local developer who had been bullying Sarah to sell the land for pennies, threatening to foreclose on her father's legacy. Sarah gasped. How did Roy know about Marcus's threats?

"Marcus thinks you're alone," Roy growled, his hand resting on his motorcycle's handlebars. "But he forgot that Thomas had family. And we protect our own."
