Previously: When waitress Ashley treated a penniless elderly customer to a warm bowl of soup, she expected nothing in return. But a mysterious folded note handed to her in secret changed everything.

Ashley stood frozen by the empty booth, her fingers tightly gripping the small piece of folded paper. When she finally opened it, her breath caught in her throat. Written in elegant, shaky handwriting were words that shattered her quiet life: "Meet me behind the old mill at 8 PM. Bring your birth certificate. I know the truth about your mother, and why she had to hide you."

Ashley’s mother had passed away in a tragic accident when Ashley was only five years old. She had grown up in foster care, believing she had no living relatives. Who was this mysterious woman, and how did she know about her mother?

A Confrontation in the Dark

At exactly eight o'clock, Ashley pulled her battered car into the gravel lot of the abandoned mill. The headlights cut through the darkness, illuminating Gertrude, who was shivering under the rusted awning. Ashley stepped out of the car, her heart pounding against her ribs.

"Who are you?" Ashley called out, holding her birth certificate tightly to her chest.

Gertrude turned, tears streaming down her face. "My name is Gertrude, Ashley. I am your maternal grandmother. Your mother didn't run away from us—she was forced to hide you to protect you from your grandfather's cruel, controlling family."

Before Ashley could process the shock, another pair of headlights blinded them. A luxury black SUV roared into the lot, kicking up gravel. A tall man in an expensive wool coat stepped out, his expression twisted in fury. It was Arthur, Ashley's estranged uncle.

"I knew you'd try to find her, you old fool," Arthur sneered, marching toward Gertrude. "You think you can just hand over the family estate to this nobody?"

"She is my daughter's child, Arthur! She has a right to her inheritance!" Gertrude cried, shrinking back.

Arthur grabbed Gertrude’s arm roughly, his eyes flashing with malice. "She has nothing. And if you don't sign the power of attorney over to me tonight, I will ensure this girl loses her job, her home, and everything else she has left."
