The Stormy Night

The rain lashed against the windows of the retro American diner like gravel thrown by a furious wind. Inside, the neon lights flickered, casting long, melancholy shadows across the empty vinyl booths. It was late, and the only customer left was a large, bearded Caucasian biker named Jack. He sat huddled in a corner booth, shivering in his soaked leather vest, his hands wrapped tightly around himself for warmth.

Behind the counter, Thomas, a slender young waiter, crossed his arms and grumbled loudly. "He's been sitting there forever. Why waste good tea on a biker?" he muttered, casting a judgmental glare toward the corner.

Clara, a friendly waitress with a heart of gold, stopped wiping the counter and looked at Thomas with disapproval. Without hesitation, she prepared a fresh, steaming mug of tea. "Because he's cold, soaked, and human," she replied softly but firmly.

Clara walked over to the corner booth and gently placed the hot mug in front of the shivering man. Jack looked up, his eyes bloodshot and filled with a deep, silent sorrow. His rough, weathered face softened as the warmth of the steam hit his skin. He murmured in a cracked voice,

"Thank you. Most folks would have shown me the door."
Clara offered him a reassuring smile, telling him to take all the time he needed.

Years passed, and the memory of that stormy night faded into the background of Clara's busy life. But fate had not forgotten. On a sunny autumn afternoon, Clara stood outside her small suburban home, looking anxiously at a foreclosure notice in her hands. Suddenly, the deep rumble of a motorcycle engine broke the quiet street. A familiar bearded man in a leather vest pulled up to her curb.

He took off his helmet and looked at her.

"Miss Clara Carter?"

Clara stared at him, her eyes widening in instant recognition. "Wait, aren't you the biker from that stormy night at the diner?" she asked, completely stunned.
