The Unfolding Secret

Stepping back behind the counter, out of Richard's direct line of sight, Nicole quickly unfolded the note. Her breath caught in her throat as she read the elegant, shaky handwriting. The words sent a cold shiver down her spine:

"Nicole, my sweet girl. I am Edith, your grandmother. Your mother did not abandon you twenty years ago; she was forced to hide you to protect you. The man who runs this diner, Richard, is not your family friend. He is your greedy uncle who stole your father's estate and left us with nothing. He has kept you here to keep an eye on you. Please, do not let him see this note."

Nicole's hands shook violently, and the world seemed to spin around her. She looked up, her wide eyes locking onto Edith's face. Edith gave her a slow, sorrowful nod of confirmation. The shock was paralyzing. All her life, Nicole had been told she was alone in the world, abandoned by a family that didn't want her. Now, the truth was staring her in the face.

Before Nicole could process the revelation, a heavy hand slammed down on the counter. It was Richard. His face was twisted in a furious scowl, his eyes locked onto the crumpled paper in her hand.

"What is that, Nicole?" Richard hissed, his voice dripping with suspicion. "And why is that old beggar eating my food for free?"

Nicole instinctively tried to hide the note in her apron pocket, but Richard grabbed her wrist with a painful grip.

"Give me that paper right now!" he demanded.

Suddenly, Edith stood up from her booth, her fragile frame radiating a sudden, fierce strength.

"Leave her alone, Richard!" Edith cried out. "You have stolen enough from this family!"

The entire diner fell dead silent. Richard froze, his face turning pale before flushing with absolute rage. He pointed a trembling finger at Edith.

"Get out of my diner, you crazy old woman, before I call the police!" Richard roared. "And you, Nicole, you are fired. Give me that note or I will make sure you never find work in this town again!"
