My Late Son's Secret Lover Showed Up at His Grave Holding a Toddler
Previously: Diane went to her son Andrew's grave to grieve in peace, but a young woman holding a toddler shattered her world with five words: "This is his daughter."
The Weight of Hidden Truths
Diane felt the ground tilt beneath her feet. The roses slipped from her gloved hands, scattering across the damp grass at the foot of Andrew’s headstone. She stared at the little girl, Lily. The child had Andrew’s nose, his high cheekbones, and most shockingly, those piercing, sky-blue eyes that Diane had looked into for twenty-four years. Still, her mind screamed in denial.
"This is some kind of sick joke," Diane breathed, her voice shaking with a mixture of grief and fury. "My son was a focused, brilliant young man. He didn't have a secret family. If this is an attempt to extort money from my family, you have targeted the wrong mother."
Megan flinched as if struck, but she didn’t back away. Tears finally spilled over her cheeks, cutting warm paths through the cold mist.
"I don't want your money, Diane," Megan said softly. "Andrew loved you so much, but he was terrified of disappointing you. You had his entire life planned out—the law firm, the high-society expectations. He was scared that if you knew he fell in love with a simple art student, you would cut him off before he could prove he could stand on his own two feet."
Megan reached into her coat pocket with one hand and pulled out a delicate silver chain. Hanging from it was a small, scratched locket. She opened it and held it out. Inside was a photograph of Diane and Andrew from his high school graduation, alongside a picture of Megan and Andrew laughing on a beach.
Diane’s heart hammered against her ribs. She recognized the locket; she had given it to Andrew on his sixteenth birthday. She had thought he lost it years ago. Seeing it now, held by this stranger, shattered the protective wall of anger she had built around her grief. The reality of her son's double life was staring her right in the face, wrapped in a camel coat and holding a child who shared her own blood.
