Friday at midnight, I stood beside my grandfather and watched his enemies fall.

Mr. Moretti turned to me, his eyes sharp and questioning. "What secrets?"

"He used to talk to himself in the garden," I said, my voice steady even though my heart was pounding. "I heard him say something about a boat and a date. 'Friday, midnight, the old pier.' He was going to meet someone."

The security chief looked at Mr. Moretti, his eyes widening. "That's tonight. The Salernos' boat docks there."

Mr. Moretti smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. It was a cold, dangerous smile, the kind that made me shiver. "Then we'll be there. But not as the prey."

He looked at me, and his expression softened. "You're brave, Daisy. But you're young. Stay here where it's safe."

"No," I said, surprising myself with my own courage. "I want to go. I want to see them pay for what they did to you."

He sighed, a long, tired sound. "You're more like your mother than I thought. She was stubborn too."

So that night, I went with him. We drove to the old pier, dark and empty except for a single boat bobbing in the water. Men in black suits waited on the dock, their faces hidden in the shadows. I stayed in the car, watching through the window, as Mr. Moretti walked out to meet them. I saw him speak, saw the men's faces change from confidence to confusion. Then, suddenly, the lights came on—police, SWAT, everyone. The Salernos were arrested on the spot, their hands cuffed behind their backs.

Mr. Moretti walked back to the car, calm as ever, as if he had just taken a stroll in the park. "It's over," he said, sliding into the seat beside me. "They'll be in prison for a long time."

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. "And Dr. Mercer?"

"He'll be in the next cell," he said. "He confessed everything."

We drove back to the mansion, the city lights flickering past the window. I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time: safe. Mr. Moretti—my grandfather—took my hand, his fingers warm and strong. "You saved my life, Daisy," he said. "But more than that, you gave me back my family."

I looked at him, this man who had been a stranger to me just days ago. "I never thought I'd have a family," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

"You do now," he said. "And you'll never be alone again."

That night, I fell asleep in a real bed, with a soft pillow and warm blankets. The next morning, I woke up to a pair of new shoes—shiny, black, with a little bow on the toe. I put them on, and I walked barefoot no more. But the best part wasn't the shoes. It was having a grandfather who loved me. And sometimes, love is the only thing that matters.
