The Discovery

The air in the County Supreme Court was thick with tension, a palpable force that seemed to press down on everyone present. Towering mahogany panels lined the walls, absorbing the hushed whispers of the spectators packed onto the heavy leather benches. Sunlight, filtering through the tall, arched cathedral windows, cut through the dusty air in dramatic beams, illuminating the polished brass railings that gleamed with nervous moisture. This was an admiralty dispute, a world of salvage claims and maritime law, and it was about to get very interesting.

Damian Knox, a man who exuded an almost predatory aura of wealth and privilege, leaned aggressively over the counsel table. His obsidian hair was slicked back, accentuating his sharp, aristocratic nose. Clad in a perfectly tailored charcoal pinstripe suit, his platinum cufflinks glinted as he tapped a diamond-encrusted pen against a stack of legal briefs. A mocking, dismissive smirk played on his lips as he addressed me, Arthur Finch, a deep-sea salvage diver whose skin was weathered by salt and sun, his beard threaded with silver. I stood unbowed, my scarred knuckles a testament to years of hard labor, a faded navy deck jacket over my chambray shirt. Beside me sat a heavy steel Pelican case, still beaded with sea water.

"You broke your back dredging rusted scrap, Arthur—you don't own my coordinates, and you leave this courtroom bankrupt!"

Damian's voice dripped with venom, his sneering lip movement leaving no doubt about his contempt. He saw me as nothing more than a common laborer, someone to be crushed under the weight of his legal might. He expected me to crumble, to accept his narrative of a failed salvage operation yielding nothing but worthless debris. The spectators shifted, their agitated murmurs a backdrop to the unfolding drama. But they didn't know what lay within that case. They didn't know the true nature of my salvage claim.
