The miracle in the ballroom lasted for only a few agonizing, beautiful seconds. As Lily tried to take a step forward, her knees buckled, and she fell back into the safety of her wheelchair. The guests erupted into a mixture of cheers and worried murmurs. Richard rushed to her side, burying his face in her lap, his body shaking with intense sobs. But Lily noticed that he couldn't look her in the eye.

After the commotion subsided, Richard wheeled Lily into a private bridal suite, with Noah staying outside with his grandmother. The silence in the room was heavy, broken only by the distant sound of the reception music.

The Weight of Guilt

Lily touched Richard’s trembling shoulder.

"Richard, what is it? I stood up. I felt my legs. Why do you look so terrified?"

Richard fell to his knees before his bride, his face pale and wet with tears.

"I can't do this anymore, Lily,"

he choked out.

"I don't deserve your love. The accident... it wasn't a phantom driver who ran us off the road two years ago. It was me. I was texting, and I lost control of the car."

Lily gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. For two years, she had believed they were the victims of a hit-and-run.

"That's not all,"

Richard sobbed, unable to meet her gaze.

"Six months ago, your specialist called me. He said your physical injuries had healed, but you were suffering from conversion disorder—a psychological paralysis caused by the trauma of the crash. He believed that if you knew the truth and found emotional peace, you would walk again."

Lily stared at her new husband in utter horror.

"You knew?"

she whispered, her voice trembling.

"You knew I could walk, and you kept it from me?"

Richard confessed that he was terrified. He believed that if Lily found out he was the one who caused the accident, she would hate him and leave him. By keeping her dependent on him, he kept her close. He had built their entire marriage on a foundation of deceit.
