Previously: When six-year-old Nora walked into Laura's bakery holding a worn brass tin, Laura expected a beggar. Instead, she was handed a photograph that unlocked a devastating six-year-old secret.

The bakery seemed to fall completely silent, the bustling street outside fading into a distant hum. Laura felt her knees grow weak as she stared at the little girl, whose brown eyes held a mixture of fear and hope. Hurrying out from behind the counter, Laura knelt down to be at eye level with the child, her heart hammering against her ribs. She wanted to grab the photograph, to scream a thousand questions, but she forced herself to keep her voice gentle.

Where did you get this, sweetie?
Laura asked, her hands shaking.
And who gave you that tin?

The Dying Confession

The young girl, who introduced herself as Nora, clutched the brass tin tightly to her chest.

My mommy gave it to me,
Nora whispered, her lower lip trembling.
She told me that if anything ever happened to her, I had to find the lady with the auburn hair at the bakery. She said you were the only one who could take care of me now.
Laura felt a chill run down her spine.
What is your mother's name, Nora?
she asked, holding her breath.
Her name was Sarah,
the girl replied softly.
But she went to sleep in the hospital last week, and the doctors said she won't wake up.

Hearing that name felt like a physical blow to Laura's chest. Sarah had been her closest friend and her trusted nurse six years ago. When Laura's baby girl, Lily, had supposedly passed away due to sudden complications in the nursery, Sarah had been the one to comfort her, only to abruptly resign and vanish from the city just a week later. For years, Laura had grieved the loss of her child, never suspecting that the tragedy was a lie. The realization hit Laura with the force of a tidal wave: Sarah hadn't been a comforting friend; she had stolen Lily.
