A Little Girl Found My Deceased Wife's Photo and Said the Most Terrifying Words
Previously: When Thomas dropped a photograph of his late wife, a little girl picked it up and claimed the woman was her living mother, leading him down a dark path of secrets.
The Cabin in the Woods
Driven by a mixture of shock, terror, and a desperate sliver of hope, Thomas followed the little girl, whose name was Harper. She led him down a narrow, overgrown path that snaked deep into the dense woods bordering the suburban road. The towering pines blocked out what little remained of the dusk light, casting long, eerie shadows across their path. Thomas’s mind raced with impossible questions. Could Sarah still be alive? How was this little girl standing before him with the exact same genetic marking as his deceased wife?
After a ten-minute walk, the dense trees gave way to a small, hidden clearing. Nestled in the center was a secluded white cottage with a bright red door. Before they could reach the porch, the door swung open, and a woman stepped out, wrapped in a woolen shawl. She had her back to them as she called out into the chilly evening air.
"Harper, honey, is that you? It's getting cold."
The sound of her voice struck Thomas like a physical blow. It was a voice he had heard in his dreams every night for six years. "Sarah?" he gasped, his voice cracking with emotion.
The woman spun around, and the shawl slipped from her shoulders, pooling at her feet. It was indeed Sarah. She looked older, her face etched with exhaustion, but it was undeniably her. However, instead of running to him, her face contorted in absolute terror.
"Thomas? No... it can't be. They told me you were dead!"she cried, backing away toward the door.
Before Thomas could move, a tall, familiar figure stepped out from the shadows of the cottage. It was Julian, Thomas’s own brother. Julian’s face turned pale when he saw Thomas, but his shock quickly morphed into a cold, menacing sneer. He reached into his heavy coat pocket, his hand wrapping around something heavy and metallic.
"You shouldn't have come here, Thomas,"Julian muttered, stepping protectively in front of Sarah.
