Previously: When Victor dropped a photo of his late wife, a young girl picked it up and claimed the woman was her living mother, unlocking a dark web of secrets.

The Secret Gallery

Victor’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stared into the child's crimson-flecked eyes. It was a genetic anomaly so rare that he had only ever seen it in one person: Elena. Trembling, he asked Sophie where her mother was. She pointed down a narrow, shadowed alleyway toward a small, unmarked art gallery with a wooden door. Without a second thought, Victor took her hand, his mind racing through a maze of impossible theories.

The interior of the gallery smelled of fresh oil paint, lavender, and turpentine—scents that instantly dragged Victor back to his happiest years. In the center of the room, a woman stood before an easel, her back to the door. She was painting a haunting landscape of a car plunging off a fiery cliff. Victor felt his knees go weak.

"Mommy, I found the man who has your picture,"
Sophie announced cheerfully.

The woman froze. Slowly, she turned around. The palette slipped from her fingers, clattering to the floor. It was indeed Elena. She looked older, her face etched with exhaustion, but those unmistakable red-flecked eyes locked onto Victor's. Instead of joy, her face contorted into sheer terror.

"Victor? No... oh God, you shouldn't be here,"
she gasped, backing away.
"They told me you were safe as long as I stayed dead!"

Before Victor could demand an explanation, the heavy front door of the gallery slammed shut. Two men in dark, tailored suits emerged from the back office, one of them holding a silenced firearm. Victor realized with a sinking heart that Elena’s tragic "death" had been a forced disappearance to protect his life from a powerful syndicate she had inadvertently crossed. By finding her, he had walked directly into the lion's den.
