Previously: Five years after losing his wife in a tragic accident, Marcus is stopped on a busy street by a little girl holding her photograph—and a shocking truth begins to unravel.

The Shadow of the Past

Without a second thought, Marcus grabbed Lily’s hand and began to run toward the distant figure. The crowded street seemed to part for them as they chased the impossible silhouette. As they drew closer, the bright glare of the sun softened, and the features of the woman in the white dress became heartbreakingly clear. It was indeed Sarah. She was older, her face etched with a quiet sorrow, but her eyes were the same ones Marcus had fallen in love with a decade ago.

"Sarah?" Marcus cried out, his voice cracking with a mixture of joy and profound confusion. "Is it really you? How can you be here? I buried you!"

Sarah took a step back, her eyes wide with terror rather than relief. She looked around frantically, ignoring his outstretched arms.

"Marcus, you shouldn't have come," she whispered, her voice trembling. "You don't understand the danger you are in just by standing here."

Before Marcus could demand answers, the harsh screech of tires echoed down the narrow street. A sleek black SUV pulled up to the curb, blocking their path. Two imposing men in dark suits stepped out, their expressions cold and calculating. One of them immediately stepped between Marcus and Sarah, his hand resting ominously inside his jacket.

"Step back, sir," the man ordered in a low, commanding tone. "This woman is under federal protection. You are interfering with an active investigation."

Sarah grabbed Lily and pulled her close, her face pale. Marcus's mind raced. Five years ago, Sarah had been an investigative journalist working on a high-profile corruption case involving powerful politicians. The "accident" had been a cover story. She had faked her death to keep Marcus from becoming a target.

"Please, Marcus, let us go!" Sarah cried out as the second man opened the SUV door. "If they know you are alive, they will find you too!"

Marcus watched in absolute horror as the men ushered Sarah and Lily into the vehicle. The door slammed shut, and the SUV sped away, leaving Marcus alone in the dust.
