The Uninvited Guest

The grand chapel was filled with the sweet aroma of white roses and fresh ivy. Mark stood at the altar, adjusting his classic double-breasted tuxedo. Beside him, his bride, Chloe, looked radiant in her lace gown. It was the wedding of the season, a million-dollar event orchestrated by Mark’s powerful mother, Eleanor. But just as the minister cleared his throat to begin the vows, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel slowly creaked open.

A tiny, shivering figure walked down the aisle. It was a young girl, no older than six, wearing a beige trench coat over a simple white dress. Her strawberry-blonde hair was tangled, and tears streamed down her cheeks. In her small hands, she clutched a torn photograph. The whispers of the wealthy guests rose like a tide, but the little girl ignored them, walking straight toward the altar with a heartbreaking determination.

"I don't want money, please," she sobbed, looking up at Mark with wide, tearful eyes. "I just want my mom not to go to heaven."

Chloe gasped, taking a step back in disgust, while Eleanor signaled the security guards. But Mark felt a strange, magnetic pull. Ignoring his mother’s sharp protests, he knelt on the cold marble floor in front of the child. "Who are you? Who sent you?" he asked softly.

"Nobody," the girl cried. "I came because she's dying."

Mark’s heart hammered against his ribs. "What's your mother's name?" he whispered, his voice trembling. The girl looked at him and said, "Johanda." The name hit Mark like a physical blow. Johanda had been his first love, the woman who had mysteriously vanished from his life seven years ago.

"She kept your picture,"
the girl added, holding up the torn photo of Mark from his college days. Without a second thought, Mark stood up, abandoned his bride at the altar, and rushed out of the chapel, carrying the little girl named Lily in his arms.
