The Interrupted Vows

The grand chapel of St. Jude was bathed in the warm, flickering glow of hundreds of scented candles. White roses draped elegantly over every pew, their sweet fragrance filling the air as Mark stood at the altar. Clad in a bespoke black tuxedo, his light brown hair perfectly slicked back, he looked down at his bride, Vanessa. She was stunning, wrapped in delicate lace and silk. It was supposed to be the most prestigious wedding of the year, uniting two of the city's most powerful families. But just as the priest cleared his throat to begin the vows, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel creaked open, shattering the sacred silence.

A collective gasp rippled through the congregation. Walking down the aisle was not a late guest, but a small girl who couldn't have been more than six years old. Her blonde hair was woven into messy braids, and she wore a dusty pink dress that was far too big for her. Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks as she clutched a crumpled, torn photograph in her tiny hands. Vanessa’s face tightened in instant irritation, whispering fiercely for the security guards to intervene, but Mark was frozen. There was something hauntingly familiar about the girl's bright blue eyes.

The little girl stopped right at the foot of the altar, looking up at Mark with heartbreaking desperation.

"I don't want money, please," she sobbed, her voice echoing off the high stone arches. "I just want my mom not to go to heaven."

Mark’s heart hammered against his ribs. Disregarding Vanessa's sharp grip on his arm, he knelt down on the cold marble floor.

"Who are you? Who sent you here?" he asked softly, his voice trembling.

"Nobody," the girl wept. "I came because she's dying. She kept your picture."
She handed him the torn photo. It was a picture of Mark from his college days, taken by the only woman he had ever truly loved—Johanda, who had mysteriously vanished six years ago.
"What is your mother's name?" Mark whispered. "Johanda," Lily replied.
Without a second thought, Mark stood up, ignored Vanessa’s furious screams, and ran out of the church.
