A Little Girl in the Rain Held the Photograph of My Deceased Wife
Previously: When Marcus dropped a vintage photo of his late wife, a little girl in a yellow raincoat picked it upβand claimed the woman in the picture was her living mother.
The Secret of the Rusted Gates
The terrifying red glow in the child's eyes paralyzed Marcus, his hand hovering inches from the photograph. The temperature in the alleyway plummeted instantly, his breath turning to thick white plumes in the freezing air. Before he could scream or run, the little girl turned and walked away, her yellow raincoat cutting through the swirling fog. Driven by a desperate, irrational hope that defied all logic, Marcus ignored his instinct to flee and pursued her.
She led him deep into a labyrinth of narrow paths, eventually stopping before the towering iron gates of an abandoned courtyard. Marcus had lived in this city his entire life, yet he had never seen this place. The gates were rusted solid, choked with dead vines, but the girl slipped through the iron bars as if she were made of mist. Marcus threw his weight against the gate, the metal groaning in protest as it swung open.
Inside, the courtyard was a graveyard of frozen white roses. Standing in the center of the ruin was a woman in a flowing white dress, her back to him. Marcus's heart hammered against his ribs. The silhouette was unmistakable.
Elena?
he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.
The woman turned slowly. It was her. She had not aged a single day since the night she vanished. But as she smiled warmly at him, her eyes flared with the same supernatural, glowing red as the child's. Standing beside her, the little girl reached out and took her hand.
I have waited so long for you to find us, Marcus,
Elena said, her voice echoing with a haunting, ethereal resonance.
I know you have many questions, but you must understand the truth about why I had to leave.
