The Secret in the Garden

The golden hour sun cast long, warm shadows across the manicured lawn of the private garden. Thomas sat quietly on the teak bench, his charcoal suit feeling heavy in the late afternoon heat. For two years, this bench had been his sanctuary, a place where he could sit in the dark and pretend his life hadn't shattered. Behind his dark sunglasses, his eyes saw nothing but a void. He heard the light, familiar footsteps of Lily, the neighbor’s eight-year-old daughter, approaching him. She was wearing her favorite green dress, her presence usually a source of simple comfort to the sightless man.

But today, there was no cheerful greeting. Without warning, Lily reached up and pulled the heavy sunglasses from Thomas's face. The sudden exposure to the warm air made him blink, though his vision remained dark.

"You're not blind," Lily said, her voice steady and chillingly serious.

Thomas froze, his breath catching in his throat. The sheer absurdity of her words struck him first, followed by a sudden, irrational spike of fear.

"What did you say?" he whispered in utter disbelief.

Lily didn't flinch. She pointed toward the brick path behind them, where Katherine, Thomas's wife, stood frozen in a peach dress. Katherine had just returned from the house, carrying a tray that now rattled in her trembling hands. Her face was completely drained of color, her eyes wide with horror.

"It's your wife," Lily continued, her small finger pointing straight at the terrified woman. "She puts it in your food."

Thomas felt his chest tighten, his breathing turning shallow and rapid as a cold sweat broke out across his neck. The peaceful garden suddenly felt like a cage.

"What are you talking about, Lily?" Thomas asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and rising panic.

Lily pointed once more, her gaze locked onto Katherine.

"Ask her what she put in your tea."
