The Locket That Couldn't Be Hidden

Victoria Rosewood moved like a woman who had lost something precious and was searching for it in every corner of the world. She knelt down slowly, heedless of the wet floor soaking through her cashmere coat, and looked directly into Maya's eyes.

"Hello, sweetheart," she said softly. "What's your name?"

Rita stepped forward, her voice a nervous laugh. "She's shy—doesn't talk much. I'll take you to the bedrooms now."

But Victoria didn't move. Her gaze had caught the glint of gold in Maya's sleeve. "What's that you have there?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Maya's hand flew to her locket, clutching it tight. "Nothing," she whispered, her first word in hours.

Rita's eyes narrowed. "It's just a cheap trinket," she said quickly. "I gave it to her for Christmas."

But Victoria reached out, her fingers gentle. "Let me see that charm," she said, and Maya felt an inexplicable pull to obey.

Slowly, Maya pulled the locket from her sleeve. The pearl was warm from her skin, and the chain was thin and delicate. Victoria's breath caught as she took it, her hands shaking.

Julian stepped closer, his eyes fixed on the locket. "That's… that's the Rosewood crest," he breathed.

Rita's face went pale. "Impossible. She's an orphan. Her parents are dead."

But Julian was already reaching into his own pocket, pulling out a matching half—a ruby crest that fit perfectly against the pearl. He clicked it into place with a soft snap, and the locket opened to reveal a miniature portrait.

Inside was a baby with dark braids and pale cheeks, wrapped in a yellow blanket. The same yellow as Maya's pinafore.

"That's our stolen baby child," Victoria gasped, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Rita stumbled back, her smile gone. "No—no, that's not—I found her in an alley. She was abandoned—"

"You're lying," Julian said, his voice cold as steel. He looked at the officers. "Handcuff her."

Rita screamed, but the officers were already moving, pulling her arms behind her back. "You can't prove anything!" she shouted. "That locket could be anyone's!"

"It has my grandfather's initials," Julian said, holding up the locket. "And the date of my daughter's birth. The daughter who was taken from the hospital nursery twenty years ago."

Maya felt the world tilt. She looked at Victoria, at Julian, at the officers dragging Rita away—and she didn't understand. "My dad gave me this," she said, her voice small and confused.

Julian knelt down, his face inches from hers. "I am your father," he said, his voice breaking. "And I have been looking for you for twenty years."

Maya's lip quivered. She didn't know whether to cry or laugh or run. But then Victoria wrapped her arms around her, and Maya felt something she had never felt before—safe.

But as the officers led Rita out, Rita turned back with a wild look in her eyes. "You think you've won?" she spat. "There's more to this story than you know. Ask her about the woman who paid me to keep her hidden."

Maya's blood ran cold. She knew exactly who Rita was talking about—the woman who visited every month, who looked at Maya with greed instead of love, who called herself Margaret.

And she was coming back tomorrow.
