Previously: When a shivering, silent little girl walked into a diner and stared at a group of rugged bikers, no one expected them to stand up and walk out on her.

The Storm Outside

As the heavy diner door swung shut behind the bikers, the diner fell into an uneasy silence. Clara, the veteran waitress who had been working the counter for twenty years, rushed over to the shivering little girl. She wrapped a warm, dry dish towel around Lily’s trembling shoulders and knelt down.

"Sweetheart, where is your mommy? How did you get here?"
Clara asked, her voice filled with maternal dread. But Lily didn't speak. She only pointed a tiny, mud-stained finger toward the dark woods across the highway.

Outside, the bikers weren't abandoning the girl; they were on a mission. Marcus had noticed the fresh, deep tire tracks cutting through the mud on the shoulder of the highway. Guided by Big John’s sharp eyes, the men pushed through the thick, wet underbrush. Fifty yards into the tree line, half-submerged in a swollen creek bed, lay a silver sedan. The front end was wrapped around a massive oak tree, smoke rising weakly into the rainy sky.

"Over here!"
Tyler shouted, sliding down the muddy bank. He peered through the shattered driver's side window. Inside, a young woman lay slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious but breathing shallowly.

Jax and Big John threw their weight against the jammed door, the metal groaning under their combined strength. With a loud pop, the door gave way. Carefully, Marcus supported the woman's neck while Big John lifted her from the wreckage. As they pulled her free, Tyler spotted a framed photograph lying on the floorboard of the car. He snatched it up, wiping the muddy water from the glass. It was a picture of the young woman, Lily, and a man wearing the distinct leather vest of the Highway Kings—a man they all knew intimately.
