Previously: When Andrew dropped a photo of his late wife, a little girl's innocent question shattered everything he knew about his past and the tragedy that tore his family apart.

The Living Ghost

Andrew’s world spun on its axis. The cobblestone alley seemed to tilt, the warm golden light suddenly feeling harsh and blinding. He knelt down to Ella's eye level, his hands trembling violently as he gently took the photograph from her small fingers. How could this be? he thought. The hospital had delivered the devastating news seven years ago: a tragic complication during childbirth had taken both his wife and their unborn daughter. He had buried an empty casket, too consumed by grief to question the powerful family that arranged the funeral.

"Where is she, Ella?" Andrew asked, his voice shaking with a mixture of terror and desperate hope. "Take me to her. Please."

Ella, sensing the urgency but comforted by the kindness in the man's eyes, nodded and grabbed his hand. She led him down the winding alleyways, turning corner after corner until they stopped in front of a small, rustic flower shop. The sign above read 'Sarah's Blooms.' Andrew's heart leaped into his throat. He pushed the heavy wooden door open, the chime of a bell echoing in the quiet shop.

Behind the counter, a woman was trimming the stems of white roses. She had her back turned, her hair tied up in a loose bun. But Andrew would recognize that silhouette anywhere. It was her.

"Mommy, look what this mister dropped!" Ella called out happily.

The woman turned around, a warm smile on her face that instantly froze the moment her eyes locked onto Andrew. The glass vase she was holding slipped from her hands, shattering loudly on the tiled floor. Water and petals splattered everywhere, but neither of them noticed.

"Andrew?" Sarah whispered, her face draining of all color. She took a step back, her eyes darting around in absolute terror. "How... how did you find us? Why are you here?"

Andrew took a step forward, tears finally spilling over his lashes. "Sarah? You're alive... Oh my god, you're alive!"

But instead of running into his embrace, Sarah's expression hardened into one of deep, bitter resentment.

"Don't come any closer," Sarah spat, her voice trembling with anger. "You made your choice seven years ago when you took my father's money and abandoned us. Why are you torturing us now?"
