The Lost Sister He Mourned for Years Walked Right Past Him in Uniform
Previously: Julian Vance thought his sister Evelyn was gone forever after a tragic deployment. But standing at an airfield ceremony, a decorated officer with a familiar face walks right past him.
A Reunion in the Shadows
As the ceremony concluded and the crowd began to disperse, Julian pushed his way through the throngs of people. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He ignored the polite warnings of military police as he bypassed the restricted barriers, his eyes locked on the dark blue uniform disappearing into a nearby hangar.
Inside the cool, cavernous hangar, the scent of aviation fuel and grease hung heavy in the air. Julian spotted her standing near a desk, removing her officer's cap. Her dark hair was pinned up in a neat bun. Hearing his frantic footsteps, she turned around, her expression hardening into a mask of professional authority.
"Sir, this is a restricted area. You need to exit immediately," she said, her voice crisp and commanding.
Julian stopped yards away from her, his hands trembling. He rolled up the sleeve of his khaki shirt, exposing the compass tattoo. On her own left wrist, peeking out from beneath her watch strap, was the faint edge of the exact same compass design—a matching tattoo they had received together on her eighteenth birthday.
"Evelyn," Julian said, his voice cracking with a decade of unshed tears. "Look at me. It's Julian. We buried you, Evie. Mom died believing you were gone."
For a fleeting second, the stoic officer's mask cracked. A flash of agonizing recognition swept across her face, and her eyes welled with tears. But she quickly blinked them away, glancing nervously toward the hangar doors before stepping closer to him.
"You shouldn't have come here, Julian," she whispered, her voice dropping to a frantic undertone. "The sister you knew had to die. It was the only way to keep you and Mom safe."
Julian stared at her in disbelief. She explained that her final mission had gone terribly wrong. To protect her family from a dangerous international cartel that had targeted her unit, the government had faked her death and given her a new identity. She had spent ten years living as Captain Evelyn Ross, a ghost serving her country in the deepest shadows, forbidden from ever contacting her past life.
