Officer Miller stepped forward, her hand resting instinctively on her holster, though her expression was soft with confusion. "Vance," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "How does Buster know you? He doesn't let anyone get this close, not even us."

Arthur looked up, holding Buster's head between his trembling, handcuffed hands. "Because he was my partner for five years," Arthur explained, his voice shaking. "Before they forced me out. Before they set me up."

Officer Davis joined her partner, her eyes darting between the emotional dog and the disheveled man. The pieces of the puzzle were beginning to fall into place. Three years ago, Arthur Vance had been abruptly dismissed from the force under a cloud of suspicion, accused of tampering with evidence.
