Previously: At a dinner with a mafia boss, Charles Whitmore claims three daughters, ignoring Claire. But Dominic Vale noticed everything—and six hours later, he showed up at her door.

The Offer That Shook Her World

Two days after the dinner, Claire was back in her storage-room office, staring at a spreadsheet. The numbers blurred. She hadn't slept well. The memory of Dominic Vale's gray eyes kept interrupting her focus.

A knock at the door startled her. She opened it to find a man in a black suit holding an envelope. 'Miss Whitmore? Mr. Vale requests your presence this evening.'

Claire's heart raced. 'Why?'

'He didn't say. A car will pick you up at seven.'

She almost refused. But curiosity—and the desperate hope that this might lead to something better—won. At seven, she got into the black sedan. It drove to a penthouse overlooking the harbor.

Dominic Vale was waiting on a leather sofa, a glass of whiskey in his hand. He gestured for her to sit. 'You're probably wondering why you're here.'

'The thought crossed my mind.'

'I did some research on you, Claire. Impressive. You saved your father's company multiple times. You've never asked for credit. You don't even have a proper title.'

Claire crossed her arms. 'What do you want?'

'I want to offer you a job. Chief operations officer at my trucking division. Double your salary, real authority, a team that reports to you.'

Claire blinked. 'Why me?'

'Because you're smart, loyal, and your father doesn't deserve you. I need someone I can trust. Someone who knows the freight business inside and out. And someone who has nothing to lose.'

Claire hesitated. If she accepted, she would be working for a man her father feared—and possibly crossed. 'What about my father?'

'Your father will find out soon enough. He'll be furious. But you're not his property, Claire. You never were.'

She looked out the window at the city lights. For years, she had worked in the shadows, fixing problems no one acknowledged. This was her chance to step into the light. But it came with a price.

'I'll think about it,' she said.

Dominic nodded. 'I don't give second chances, Claire. But I'll give you one. Just one.'

She left the penthouse in a daze. The next morning, she woke to an email: Charles had learned about the meeting. His furious reply was waiting in her inbox.

The Confrontation

'Claire, what the hell were you thinking?' Charles's voice boomed through the phone. 'You went to Dominic Vale's penthouse? Do you have any idea what that man is capable of?'

Claire held the phone away from her ear. 'He offered me a job, Dad. A real one.'

'A job? You have a job. You work for me.'

'I work in a storage closet, fixing your mistakes for free. That's not a job. That's indentured servitude.'

Charles sputtered. 'I gave you everything—'

'You gave me nothing. You've ignored me since Mom died. You didn't even pay for my college—I had scholarships. You've never once asked how I'm doing.'

'That's not true—'

'It is true. And you know it. The only reason I stayed is because I felt guilty. But I'm done feeling guilty for existing.'

There was a long silence. Then Charles's voice turned cold. 'If you take that job, you're no longer my daughter. You'll be cut off completely.'

Claire felt a strange sense of relief. 'I was already cut off, Dad. I've been cut off for fifteen years.'

She hung up. The next day, she accepted Dominic's offer.

Her first week at Vale Holdings was intense. She learned the operation inside out, and she found more inefficiencies than she'd ever seen at Whitmore. Dominic trusted her with sensitive information, and she proved her worth. But she also noticed something odd: a pattern of missing funds that didn't add up. Someone was skimming from the trucking division, and she was determined to find out who.

Her investigation led her to a name she didn't expect: Rebecca Price, Charles's wife. Rebecca had a secret bank account, funded by a shell company that seemed to be siphoning money from both Whitmore and Vale operations. Claire had proof. But revealing it would destroy her stepmother—and possibly her father, if he was involved.

She brought the evidence to Dominic. He studied it, then looked up at her. 'I knew your father was hiding something. But this is bigger than I thought. Are you ready for what happens next?'

Claire nodded. 'I've been ready my whole life.'

Dominic smiled—a rare sight. 'Good. Because I'm about to show you the real reason I brought you in.'
